We all have a habit of comparing ourselves with others — how we look, the jobs we have, the money we earn, the success we achieve, even the relationships we have. Comparison can quietly find its way into almost every part of our lives.

But what if we looked at comparison differently?

Compare yourself to who you were yesterday

Instead of asking “Am I doing better than them?”, ask: “Am I doing better than I was yesterday?” Have I grown compared to a month ago, six months ago, or a year ago? What have I learned? What have I overcome? How have I evolved?

These are healthier comparisons because they keep the focus on your own journey. Your progress may not look like someone else’s, and it does not have to.

Look at what you already have with fresh eyes

There are people who are working and hoping for the very things we sometimes take for granted: the home we complain about, the job we wish were different, the relationships we sometimes overlook, and the everyday comforts that have become routine.

This is not about dismissing our challenges or telling ourselves we should not want more. It is about developing gratitude for what we already have while continuing to work towards what we want.

A healthier way to look at comparison

Comparison is not always the problem. Who we compare ourselves to and why makes the difference. Compare yourself to your past self to recognise your growth. Look at what you already have through the eyes of someone who is still hoping for it. And then keep moving forward.

The goal is not to be better than someone else. The goal is to become better than who you were yesterday, while being grateful for who you are today.
